Good Smell Perplexes New Yorkers

Good Smell Perplexes New Yorkers - New York Times

An unseen, sweet-smelling cloud drifted through parts of Manhattan last night. Arturo Padilla walked through it and declared that it was awesome.

Late Night Drinking

Chairman of the Manly Liquor Accord, Nick Vescio says that taking pubs to court over late night drinking laws would waste taxpayers money and not solve anything.

He’s right. Over the last twenty years, the Manly Council and other fringe groups have progressively turned Manly into a retirement village for the priveleged few. What was once a vibrant nightspot with plenty of late night entertainment and dining options is slowly closing down.

There's no coincidence that this story is being run on the very day that daylight saving starts (where we lose an hour by winding clocks forward). Could it be that opponents to late night drinking are trying to use the time change to catch pubs and clubs out ?

The next big thing in Manly …. late night Bingo !

Blogs No Longer Safe for Work

Wired News: No Longer Safe for Work: Blogs

Robert Mason (not his real name) would love to spend a few minutes during lunch catching up on blog posts from around the web, but his company doesn't allow it. The financial institution where Mason works as a vice president has security filters set up to block access to -- among other things -- any website that contains the phrase "blog" in the URL.

Flock Me

I have read a little bit about the Flock browser which has just been released in Beta. (isn’’t everything nowdays).

I’’ve got to say that this is very impressive. For a long time now I’’ve battled with keeping del.icio.us and Flickr tags in sync. Flock does this for you. It also does it for other non photo pages too.

Having done this the long way round for a long time, Flock has solved a problem I’’ve had (mainly boredom and time).

Long live Flock …. Flock me baby and pimp my links.

Tempted by blogs, spam becomes 'splog'

The scourge of e-mail--spam--has reinvented itself for the world of blogs, in a phenomenon experts have dubbed "splog." And Google is in the hot seat.

I can’t resist commenting …. does this mean that unsolicited porn comments … are called “splooge” ?

Listal

Thanks to a videocast (is there such a word) today I watched from Amber Mac and the folks at www.command.tv I am now logging my book collections online with www.listal.com

Listal is on an online organiser which allows you to record and tag which books, dvd, music and games you have and publish them in a list. My list is at peterkonnecke.listal.com.

I think this would be really good if you happen to lose a favourite item. You'll always have an online record of it.

Theres a greasemonkey script and a couple of bookmarklets which also help with adding items.

Wiki Don't

I have spent a few hours today improving my skills and adding to some Wikipedia documents that I'm editing.

What I thought was appropriate content seems to have been jumped on by the editing staff to the point that I am now somewhat disillusioned with the whole process.

I'm sure theres a valid reason but for me I just wanted to take part, build community and develop some excellent content for the web.

Wiki Nation

Back in April I joined the ranks of Wikipedians who are contributing massive amounts of content to the collective knowledge of the world wide web.

I have been working on several articles recently including one about my hometown of Beacon Hill NSW. More background on my Wiki wanderings can be found here.

My plans, of which I have hundreds, include sharing some of my Flickr photo collection with Wikipedia and beyond. I can’t imagine how educators and historians ever got along without the web.

Might I say these articles are always being edited, so please bookmark them and return to them often.

Checking Out Your Cab Driver By Cameraphone

Checking Out Your Cab Driver By Cameraphone

In a world of crazy cab drivers, it appears that some people are a bit afraid to ride cabs these days. Apparently, folks in South Korea have decided this is a big problem and therefore are planning to stick special cameraphone-enabled barcodes inside and outside of cabs, so that riders can snap a quick photo, and "text-message it to their friends or family.

More Turbulence for Secure Flight

Lawmakers are looking to put more checks on the Transportation Security Administration's long-running effort to come up with a new way to conduct background checks on airline passengers.

The project, Secure Flight, is supposed to allow the government to take over from the airlines the daily duty of checking about 1.8 million air travelers' names against terrorist watch lists.
