Sydney gears up for new year's celebrations

Sydney gears up for new year's celebrations. 31/12/2005. ABC News Online

This year's New Year's Eve celebrations in Sydney will show that the city has a heart, with a heart-shaped symbol on the Harbour Bridge.

The first outline of the heart will appear during the family fireworks session at 9pm AEDT.

More of the heart will appear each hour until the full fireworks display at midnight.

City heart: Organisers say the symbol is particularly relevant this year.

Total fire bans are in place across New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT as crews brace themselves for extreme weather conditions this weekend.

One thousand firefighters are on stand-by across NSW, and the Rural Fire Service (RFS) says it is aiming to put out 20 fires burning across the state before the weather deteriorates further tomorrow.

Hottest New Year's Day forecast

Hottest New Year's Day forecast. 31/12/2005. ABC News Online

The Weather Bureau is predicting tomorrow will be the hottest New Year's Day on the Sydney record.

Senior forecaster Chris Webb says on the first day of 1928 it was 38 degrees Celsius in the city, but the bureau is predicting 39 degrees for tomorrow and up to 43 in the west.

"Focusing on the city it looks like we're forecasting a record - forecasting 39 - if we get that high it will be the hottest New Year's Day on record," he said.

He says it should cool down by tomorrow night.

"At this stage we think it'll be a hot, fine day with north to north-westerly winds freshening during the day over most of the Sydney metropolitan area," he said.

"There could be some very weak afternoon, very coastal sea breezes - we're not sure about that but generally freshening north-westerly winds before a gusty southerly change at night - in the evening or at night, but essentially a hot day."

The sayings of Kerry Packer 4

"If a working class Englishman saw a bloke drive past in a Rolls-Royce, he'd say to himself 'Come the social revolution and we'll take that away from you, mate.' Whereas if his American counterpart saw a bloke drive past in a Cadillac he'd say 'One day I'm going to own one of those.' To my way of thinking the first attitude is wrong. The latter is right."

"I've been to the other side, and let me tell you son, there's nothing there." - In 1990 after his heart stopped while playing polo.

The sayings of Kerry Packer 5

"Kerry Francis Bullmore Packer. Reluctantly." - To a federal parliamentary media inquiry, when asked to state his full name and the capacity in which he appeared.

The sayings of Kerry Packer 2

“An Alan Bond only happens to you once." - After Mr Bond bought the Channel Nine network for $1.05 billion in 1987. Mr Packer bought it back three years later for $300 million.

"There is a little bit of the whore in all of us, gentlemen. What is your price?" - To the Australian Cricket Board in 1976, seeking the right to televise Test matches.

Firefighters are bracing for a black Christmas as searing temperatures threaten to combine with low humidity and high winds to fan major bushfires across much of eastern Australia.

Extreme fire danger is current nationwide, with total bans in Victoria and NSW as temperatures soar towards 40 degrees Celsius in tinderbox conditions.

Sydney and Brisbane are forecast to reach 38 degrees Celsius tomorrow, while Melbourne is expecting 36.

Thousands march against racism

Thousands march against racism

I’ve had enough …. I’’ve stayed quiet on this now It’s my turn.

You see whats happened ! Now we can’t even fly our flag without being called racist …. damn it … it was just one eighth of one percent of Sydney’’s population in the riot at Cronulla and of those a small percentage of them attacked !! That does not make Australians RACIST !!! It makes a very small miniscule segment of the community racist …. and you will get that in any city in any country in the world !

So now …. because I’m Australian and I fly the flag of my country …. I’m racist.

Am I now supposed to fly the flag of Lebanon, or Syria, or Saudi Arabia, or Iraq or Egypt, or Libya, or Afghanistan or any other country in the Middle East …. just not my own ?

Marching for peace: Protesters say they are sick of racism in Australia.

Was Brian Wilshire telling the truth ?

There has been a lot said about the comments made by 2GB commentator Brian Wilshire in regards to the Cronulla riot. I discovered this post today that might make you think twice about this problem.

The big question here is .. was he just telling the truth ? And if so then .. why was he made to apologise for reporting the facts ?

People have been accusing 2GB of inciting bad behaviour because they have "editorialised" the news. But if you click this link and read the post, and follow the other links you might think otherwise. Was he reporting facts ? You decide.

Sneers from those who think they're above it all

Sneers from those who think they're above it all - Opinion - smh.com.au

A YEAR ago someone came up with the term "conspicuous compassion" to describe the public expression of fake concern for others. This week we've seen its opposite, which might be called "conspicuous contempt". Critics from ethnic melting pots such as Turramurra and Woollahra have been lining up to abuse white-bread Cronulla. I suspect this might have more to do with class than race.

Stay away from the beaches

Stay away from the beaches

THE Premier, Morris Iemma, has warned the public to stay clear of the beach this weekend, amid "credible threats" of large-scale riots.

As police prepared to mount their biggest operation since the Olympics to end this week's outbreak of racial violence, Mr Iemma yesterday asked Sydneysiders not to visit beaches in eastern suburbs, Cronulla, the Central Coast, Newcastle and Wollongong.

Sea of contentment ... swimmers and surfers take to the waves at
Bondi last night, despite a warning by the Premier to stay away
from all beaches this weekend.

A tale of two Sydneys

A tale of two Sydneys: affluent versus aspiring

THE stark racial separation of Sydney that seeped into violence in Cronulla has been revealed geographically.

Mapping of the city by the Centre of Population and Urban Research at Monash University shows a high concentration of blue-collar people from a non-English-speaking background in the western suburbs.

Years of rejection erupted in open rebellion

Years of rejection erupted in open rebellion

IT'S a long way from Brooklyn to the streets of Belmore, Punchbowl and Lakemba, but Tupac Shakur would find much to make him welcome. His name is sprayed on walls and fences and scratched on toilet doors. When concrete is poured, the shorthand follows: "2pac 4ever."

That a dead singer finds eternal life in the adulation of fans is a curious phenomenon. Elvis is that classic cultural oddity. But Love Me Tender in the hands of Tupac, the rapper murdered in 1996, is full of Glock pistols, cops and bad ass bitches, a culture of rejection and victimhood and an intense claim to the unfettered right of revenge.

Cronulla Facts #1

Approximately 5000 people took part in the rally which ended up in a riot partly due to alcohol consumption.

Sydney has a population of approx 4 million people, which means approx one eighth of one percent of the city’’s population took part. Hardly cause for news services around the globe to claim “Sydneysiders rioted”.

More correctly one eighth of one percent of Sydneysiders rioted.

IntelliScaner Kitchen Companion 100 keeps track of groceries

IntelliScaner Kitchen Companion 100 keeps track of groceries: "IntelliScanner — which developed the Wine Collector 150 we peeped a while ago — now has a version of the Bluetooth barcode scanner for folks who would rather keep track of less intoxicating substances. The Kitchen Companion 100 is the same basic scanner, but adds a database of over 300,000 grocery items, along with nutrition data from the USDA. Scanned info can be downloaded to a PC, Mac, PDA or cellphone, letting you compile detailed grocery lists. At $279 (a USB version is $179), it seems a bit steep for a tool to help you figure out how much peanut butter you need to buy, though it could come in handy for big families that have massive shopping lists — and lots of kids who can do the scanning, database analysis and list production while you kick back with the output from the Wine Collector.
